1. Respecting the boss’s opinion even when I disagreed (a tough one for me, took years and thank God I had a forgiving boss)

2. Dressing appropriately for clients and as a ‘boss’ and ‘leader’ in the office (Dress for Success)

3. Going into debt, getting a BIG pay cut, almost going out of business in mid career (the 80’s)

4. Being a businessman first priority (architect secondary)

5. Listening instead of talking

6. Computer and tech skills

7. Sales skills (no hype, just making a connection)

It’s estimated that 18% of men in U.S.A suffer from erectile dysfunction and the chances levitra shop uk of getting it after your 40’s increases dramatically (sadly Ben is 42 and also one of 18% men in the U.S.A, tough luck there). http://www.heritageihc.com/articles/13/ viagra sale If it was psychological or if it was due to a number of things. Verbal presentation skills (this took so many years it’s embarrassing)

9. Procrastination avoidance (difficult when judging yourself – but it has to be you) (it feels good when you stop the P)

10. Being early for everything, being prepared for Anything (what could go wrong?)

Every single one of these skills I LEARNED during my career (as an architect at MGA in Houston). Not one was taught in all the years spent in school. Not one of these skills had to do with being in a specific profession or trade. Perhaps this is why anyone can be a success in life, despite their lack of education or formal training.

Numbers 4 through 9 above became learning priorities as a direct result of number 3 above. Number 10 came late in my career (2001) and paid off in client relations more than I would have ever guessed.

Here’s the thing. You have to be good at all these and be interested in learning more about them. It’s not architecture, it’s your career. Until you retire, you have to keep it up. There’s those new guys right behind you, eager to take what you have. Professionalism will keep you ahead.

Lecture, completed.

I am an architect, and a businessman like you were. Most of these ideas are helpful. About the dressing thing – are you so sure? Looking like a fool is not good.
